In this class with Karen Chabot, you'll learn why it’s so important to have compassionate, professional boundaries and how it can instill a sense of dignity and respect to our clients, our industry and our selves. This class will demonstrate why respect refers to a consideration or thoughtfulness manifested by words and deeds.
You will come to understand why the dynamics of a therapeutic relationship are founded on respect and trust and why there are several indications, some of which are discussed in codes of ethics and standards of practice. This class will provide an open discussion of why it is so imperative that therapists recognize the value of the therapeutic relationship and the client as an individual. The first inkling of respect is demonstrated through communication during the informed consent process. This explains the how, who, why and when of the session, which allows the client to ask questions and to work toward mutual agreement. We explain to the client the importance of self-disclosure and that all information will be kept confidential. It’s important to inform the client that it is both illegal and unethical for you to disclose anything that might be considered private. Learn about why gratitude for the time you are able to spend with your client is also a way of valuing and respecting your client.
